Are you already in Uganda or planning to make a safari to this remarkable African country and still taking time to decide whether to rent a car or opt for public transport means for the safari? If asked, I would recommend renting car much as many travelers will choose public means because they are many and easily found within the country much as are sometimes difficult to comply with at the time you need them the most.
A person on a holiday or vacation doesn’t need to have restricted time to travel from one destination to the other, which is the challenge with public means because most of them have restricted time of traveling not really at any time you need them to be available thus you may have to use the private means or rent cars.
Nonetheless, renting cars to solve some of these traveler problems such as time-bound transportation is the main reason tourists on Uganda safaris choose to rent cars due to the numerous advantages you will enjoy on your holiday over the counterparts and these include;
Car rentals usually provide quality services
Unlike drivers of public transport means (especially in Uganda) that are not trained/qualified drivers but start taxi conductors and learn from the drivers, which is why you would rather use the services of car rentals that have well trained chauffeurs willing to take you to your final destination with good guidance. Besides that, the cars are always in perfect conditions and feature a number of state of art facilities such as coolers, MP3 players, air conditioners, adjustable seats for resting as well as food handlers to make your travel memorable which is not the case with most public transport means in this country.
Interestingly, car rentals are cheaper
In most cases, public transport means charge according to the distance covered/traveled which becomes more costly for someone traveling to far places such as the National Parks in Uganda that are generally found in remote and hard to reach areas thus if you are to use public transport, you will go with different carriers until your final destination which is not the case with car rentals where you can use the same carrier until your final destination and always charge a standard price for services per day regardless of the distance traveled.
It is always easier to book
Car rentals in the country are always booked in different ways such as through websites/online, emails, calling the car rental company, through friends and family as well as reaching the offices physically, which is not always the case with public transport means.
You will be surprised that car rentals are convenient for self drives
Unlike public transport means where you have to find them at a specific location, with car rentals you can be found at your place of convenience, be it your home, hotel, airport. You can be picked to your final destination.
Not only that, public transport means can’t take you until your final destination but have specific place to stop-bus stops or taxi parks then you may need to hire another means to take you to your final place. The car rentals on the other hand can also take you to places not indicated in your itinerary and can have stopovers at your own convenience.
Taking a safari in Uganda is one of the most exciting and memorable activities you can ever do. The thrill of seeing one of the big five is an emotion that one can never forget in East Africa you can take a guided safari with a trained safari guide. Are you planning to take gorilla safaris into Bwindi Forest, or you would just prefer an adventure trip into one of Uganda’s savanna national parks? These guided safaris can either be a drive through a national park or a game reserve or even guided hikes or horse rides.
While a guided safari may sound the safest option for the new safari goer there are some questions you should ask be asking before you book your trip:
1. Does the guide possess a qualification or certification?
There are many different institutions that provide training and certifications for guides. One example would be the USAGA of Uganda whereby other companies train field guides to be able to pass the USAGA exams. Simply asking if the guides taking you are USAGA certified helps you understand if they have the necessary knowledge to safely take you on a game drive.
2. Putting the qualification aside, how many years has the guide been working?
Often experience counts more than qualifications but having both would not hurt. The longer the safari guide has been at a company the more experience the guide should have. When it comes to safari guides, experience is the best requirement for a wonderful and memorable trip.
3. Will there be more than one guide?
A guided tour will often have more than one guide, if it is a guided walk there could be two guides. On some guided drives there is a safari guide and a tracker on the vehicle to increase sightings of animals. Having two specialist guides can reduce your safety risks greatly. Ask the company how many guides they use and if they say one, ask why?. In most cases the company can liaise with the rangers at the park to be safe.
4. What means of communication do the guides have?
If something were to happen on your guided safari how would the guides (or you) contact someone for assistance? Do the guides just have intermittent cell phone signal or do they have a proper radio communication system between safari vehicles as well as central office where help can be reached? The quicker help can be called the safer you will be in case of a bad situation.
5. Is the guide linked to a major company?
Going with a big name, well-known safari company is often more expensive but the bigger companies should have proper communication infrastructure, guides that have passed exams and often will ensure there is a second guide with the safari group; they have a reputation to uphold! If you go for a cheaper option with a smaller company, you might be putting yourself at risk. Then again if you do your research, read reviews and ask the right questions, you may be in better hands even in a smaller, more intimate setting. It is all about doing the right research.

Uganda a block of East Africa hosts an incredible variety of habitats and wildlife. The conservation of these habitats into National Parks and Wildlife Reserves is the cornerstone for wildlife viewing. One of the most important geographical features of the region is the Great Rift Valley. The large depressions within the Rift Valley fed by streams have become great Lakes, around which many species of wildlife can be found.
They include several National Parks and Wildlife Reserves and concentrate on different aspects of wildlife observation. Some Uganda safari packages focus on a particular interest or activity like bird watching, primate viewing. Some safari guidelines bases on national Parks are too often selected for quantity of animals, certainty and ease of viewing on the game drives. Some National Parks became so popular that they are overcrowded with too many minibuses and jeeps getting careless and scaring animals. Animals move around, seasons change weather varies. There is no way of knowing what each day will bring and there is no guarantee that you’ll see absolutely everything you are after, but most safaris give an amazing wildlife experience!
The long stay is an important aspect, the more time you have to go on safari the more you will see! The chosen travel style will also greatly enhance your wildlife experience; Camping safari will offer you a different experience than lodge safari a part from Katara lodge in queen which provide wildlife view verandah. The game drives are the most common way to observe African wildlife and for most visitors the backbone of their safari. Game drives should be undertaken in a customized 4 x 4 drive vehicle with a driver-guide who has experience and knowledge of the area.
The game drives can be organized at any time of the day but you will have the best chances to encounter wildlife in the early morning and late afternoon. It is cooler and animals are then most active. A first-time visitor will want to see plenty of game, mainly large animals. Although the major animals are important, we advise not to get too caught up with ‘Big Five’ fever, the African wilderness has so much more to offer, especially its incredible bird-life, smaller mammals, primates, reptiles, trees and other plants… If you are receptive to learn about the different aspects of nature and conservation your trip will be much more meaningful and pleasurable.
